Abstract

TLRs are the well-known receptors of innate immunity that play a crucial role in priming the inflammatory responses and mounting an efficient immunity. These receptors are widely expressed in both immune- and non-immune cells enabling antimicrobial responses to be triggered in several tissues. However, in the absence of infection, they are involved in tissue homeostasis. The improper or inappropriate activation of such receptors might contribute to the development of various disorders like cancer and autoimmunity whether in the context of infection or not. This chapter attempts to survey the biology of TLRs and their significance in host defense. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
