Abstract

A significant increase in prevalence of cataract is anticipated over the next two decades due to increasing life expectancy. This demands an increase in capacity of eye care services which is limited by insufficient human resources including ophthalmologists and inadequate financial investment in this field. Developing new systems for cataract surgery delivery can be part of the solution to fulfill this demand. One promising approach is immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS). It has attracted attention of ophthalmologists in different countries. Although there are some studies to compare outcomes of this style to traditional one, many aspects of this approach remain controversial. Improvement in efficacy of referral for cataract surgery and patient flow in eye care units is another crucial step. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
