Abstract

Ozone therapy has emerged as a promising adjunctive therapy in dentistry, particularly in the management of various oral health conditions. This review aimed to evaluate recent advances in the use of ozone therapy in dentistry, focusing on its efficacy, safety, and clinical outcomes based on clinical trials. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in several databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus from 2018 to 2024. This study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Moreover, CASP tool was used to assess the quality of the studies. Considerable improvements in periodontal parameters, soft tissue healing after implantation, and pain management after root canal were reported. Trials showed that ozone therapy had better clinical outcomes than traditional treatments, especially in reducing inflammation, pain, and bacterial load in periodontal pockets. However, some studies did not demonstrate any significant effect of ozone on plaque formation and gingivitis, indicating variability in results depending on the application and concentration used. Ozone therapy is a useful adjunct in dental treatments with revealed benefits, especially in periodontal treatment and soft tissue healing. In general, ozone therapy can significantly enhance clinical practice in dentistry. Further studies are necessary to establish long-term results and develop biosafety protocols. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
