Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disorder associated with inflammation and degeneration of neurons in the central nervous system (CNS). Cognitive impairment is one of the most common MS symptoms that can be recognized in 40%–70% of MS patients. In this chapter, we have summarized the literature about the role of immune factors in cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment in MS patients is influenced by immune cells and cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17, IL-18, and TNF-α, which may reveal the underlying mechanisms that are therapeutically addressable. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
