Abstract

Methyl disulfide (CAS 624-92-0), as a naturally occurring substance, is synthesized for commercial purposes. One industrial application is as a sulfiding agent to catalyze other reactions. Exposure to high concentrations of methyl disulfide alone can cause skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation, and also CNS depression after heavy inhalation exposure. Based on single exposure animal tests, methyl disulfide is considered moderately toxic if swallowed, slightly toxic if absorbed through the skin, and slightly toxic if inhaled. The compound has a strong, objectionable odor when undiluted and can cause nausea, dizziness, or headache. The powerful and penetrating odor of this material when left undiluted can limit voluntary exposure. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
