Abstract

Cancer metabolism has been of attention due to its fundamental role in cancer treatment. Altered metabolic pathways in cancer cells can be targeted for cancer therapies while affecting the efficacy of specific therapies. As nanomedicines have been finding their way into cancer treatment, their effects on cancer cell metabolism are arising issues. The direct effects of nanomedicines, regardless of their content, on cancer cell metabolism might affect the course of cancer treatment. On the other hand, this effect could be used as a therapeutic approach to eliminate cancer cells. In this book chapter, the general effects of the nanomaterials component of nanomedicines on cellular metabolism, with a focus on cancer cell metabolism, will be discussed. Afterward, the effects of nanomaterials on lipid, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism and redox homeostasis and the mechanism of action will be explained. At last, the challenges and opportunities of this interaction will be examined. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
