Abstract

Background: The present study aimed to determine the frequency of clinical and laboratory findings of patients dead within 24 hours of admission to the emergency room of Alzahra hospital done during 2022-2024. Methods: In a cross sectional study, 138 patients who dead in the first 24 hours of enterance to Emergency department of Alzahra hospital were selected and demographic, clinical symptomscause and time interval from patient arrival at the emergency room to death were extracted and analyzed. Findings: The most common complaint was decreased level of consciousness with a frequency of 59 cases (42.8%) and according to the results obtained, the most common initial diagnosis was stroke with a frequency of 24 cases (17.4%) and in 51 cases (37%), cardiorespiratory arrest was mentioned in the initial diagnosis of the patients. Of the 138 deceased patients studied, 13 (9.4%) had a history of hospitalization in the previous week, 8 of whom were men and 5 were women (61.5% vs. 60%), and there was no significant difference in the history of hospitalization between men and women (P = 0.91). Conclusion: Based on the results of our study, the time between patient arrival to the emergency room to get first visit, age, underlying disease, the patient's admission to the emergency room less than a week and arrival times were an important factor in the mortality of the patients, and therefore it is necessary to reduce hospital mortality, necessary measures must be taken to provide timely treatment to the patients. On the other hand, because the majority of patients had a decreased level of consciousness, tending to patients with a decreased level of consciousness, can significantly reduce the mortality of patients in the emergency department. © 2026, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
