Abstract

Traumatic brain injury is not uncommon and headache is one of the most common features of postconcussion syndrome. In some, this syndrome might be protracted and disabling. If a headache develops within 7days after head trauma, it can be attributed to the trauma. When a preexisting primary headache becomes chronic or worsens significantly in close temporal relation to such an injury, both the initial primary headache diagnosis and a diagnosis of posttraumatic headache (PTH) are appropriate. Acute PTH usually resolves within 3months and should be treated precisely to prevent chronicity. PTH can mimic other primary headache types and frequently exhibits features of tension-type or migraine headaches. Many studies recommend management according to the type of primary headache it resembles. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
