Abstract

Traditional Persian Medicine (TPM) is a holistic medicine with a humoral approach which originated from the land of Persia and has old antiquity. Treatment modalities in TPM can be divided into two categories: pharmacological interventions and non-pharmacological ones. Pharmacological interventions include natural pharmaceutical dosage forms that originated from plants, animals, and/or minerals. Medicinal plants are the most used components in natural pharmaceutical dosage forms in TPM. Makhzan-al Advia is the most popular book in the field of Materia medica in TPM, written in 1769 AD. It contains 1,114 medicinal plants belonging to 66 different families, the most common of them being Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, and Apiaceae. In books devoted to Materia medica in TPM, each medicinal plant has its own monograph, and drug monographs are composed of some sections including synonyms, identity, temperament (Mizaj), therapeutic use, dose, adverse reactions, use during pregnancy and lactation, and substitute. So, TPM manuscripts are invaluable sources for identifying novel pharmacological activities for medicinal plants and new drug discovery after designing preclinical and clinical studies to confirm the claimed biological properties. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
