Abstract

Introduction: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a persistent inflammatory condition of the sinuses. Traditional herbal remedies, including Origanum species (e.g., O. majorana L. and O. vulgare L.), have been used to alleviate symptoms associated with this condition. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Origanum in the treatment of CRS. Methods: A comprehensive search of electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, was conducted to identify relevant studies up to June 2024. Inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), observational studies, and non-randomized clinical trials assessing the effects of Origanum species on chronic sinusitis. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed. Meta-analysis was conducted using a random-effects model. The protocol has been registered in PROSPERO as 1026376. Results: A total of 4 studies involving 367 samples for symptom relief and 239 for SNOT-22 and VAS satisfaction score were included in the analysis. The use of Origanum species showed a significant reduction in symptom scores (pooled mean difference [PMD] = 24.76, 95% CI: 15.35 to 34.17, p < 0.001) and in symptom relief rate [RR]=3.13, 95% CI: 1.56 to 6.25, p<0.001). No serious adverse effects were reported. Discussion: Origanum species appears to be an effective and safe adjunct treatment for reducing symptoms of CRS. Conclusion: Further high-quality RCTs are needed to confirm these findings and to establish standardized dosages and formulations. 2026, The Author(s).
