Abstract

Burkitt lymphoma is an uncommon type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma described with aggressive B-cell growth. The disease is predominantly seen in children or young adults involving the jaw or lymph nodes. Burkitt lymphoma encompasses three subtypes: endemic form, sporadic form, and immunodeficiency related form. The disease is associated with chromosomal translocations pertaining to the eighth chromosome (8q24) and specifically the MYC oncogene with the result of uncontrolled cell proliferation. It is highly responsive to brief duration intensive chemotherapy, making it literally a highly curable hematologic malignancy, though treating older patients requires more caution. Relapsed or refractory cases face an abysmal prognosis. Future research focuses on targeted therapies and immunomodulatory approaches besides hematopoietic cell transplant to improve outcomes. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights are reserved.
