Abstract

Cancer chemotherapy is frequently associated with considerable side effects and may give rise to the development of drug resistance in tumors. To address these challenges, nanocarriers have been developed to enhance the efficacy of anticancer drugs while minimizing adverse effects. Among these, liposomes—colloidal vesicles encased by phospholipid bilayers or multilayer membranes—have emerged as a drug delivery vehicle. Liposomes can be directed to tumor sites utilizing either passive or active strategies. Active targeting entails the attachment of specific molecules (e.g., vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins, peptides, aptamers, or antibodies) to the surface of the liposome, facilitating their ability to identify and bind to tumor-specific markers. This targeted approach aids in mitigating chemotherapy-related side effects and addressing drug resistance. This review examines various surface bioengineering techniques aimed at enhancing the efficacy of nanoliposomes as drug carriers. © 2027 selection and editorial matter, Jinoop Arackal Narayanan and Kanmani Subbu Subbian; individual chapters, the contributors.
