Abstract

The concept of mitotherapy has come from the ability of mitochondria to transfer between cells at physiologic or pathologic conditions. Promising results have been obtained from mitochondria transplantation studies in in vitro and in vivo models of diseases. In this regard, neurologic and cardiovascular disorders, cancer, and drug-induced toxicities have received more attention. Similar to other procedures, this approach, besides its advantages, has a number of limitations including the probability of immune reactions and the obligation for rapid isolation and usage of mitochondria during transplantation. Numerous studies are underway to addresses these limitations and to optimize the isolation and preservation of mitochondria along with modifications that permit enhanced delivery and internalization of these organelles into the recipient tissue and cells. In this chapter, a number of these studies and concerns regarding the mitochondria transplantation have been discussed. © 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
