Abstract

The study of the effects of plants’ constituents, or phytochemicals of fruit and vegetables, on gene expression focuses on identification and understanding of the interaction of phytonutrients at the molecular level, with the genome, to define the relationship or causality between these compounds and human health. Advances in this emerging field of research expand upon progress in other domains, such as technologies related to the identification of natural compounds, along with gene differentials and protein expression. The desired outcome of this research could be identification of genetic factors for chronic diseases on which genetic patterns with epigenetic markers and foods have influence. Certain bioactive compounds with particular benefits for health could be identified to provide specific diet plans with functional foods that are effective in prevention of diseases, and maximize health. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
