Abstract

Background and Aim: Colorectal cancer poses a worldwide health issue, with significant regional variations in Iran. This study aimed to estimate the incidence, mortality, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) for colorectal cancer in Sabzevar’s population in 2019 in Iran, to facilitate targeted regional interventions. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the population served by Sabzevar University of Medical Sciences in 2019. After gathering the information, it was entered into CanMod. The Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), which combine Years of Life Lost (YLLs) and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs), were then calculated by age group. Results: The estimated incidence rate of colorectal cancer in men was 17.75, and the estimated incidence rate in women was 11.18 (per 100,000 population). The estimated mortality rate from colorectal cancer in men was 9.36, and in women was 7.15 (per 100,000 population). The studies and expert opinion gave expected 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year survival rates were 85%, 60%, and 40%, respectively. The burden of colorectal cancer in Sabzevar was calculated to be 464 years, with 277 years of burden for men and 187 years of burden for women. A total of 397 years of Life Lost (YLL) were lost. Years lived with a disability (YLD) lost were 67 years. The DALY rate per 100,000 population was 119 for males and 82 for females. Conclusions: Our study results, compared with provincial and national estimates, indicated a relatively high prevalence of colorectal cancer in this region. Despite the early detection and treatment of this disease, screening and early diagnosis could be an essential health priority for this region. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
