Abstract

The development of functional nanomaterials as well as aptamer selection technologies has led to significant advances in the synthesis of nanomaterials, including nanomaterial-based aptamer bioconjugates. Nanomaterials that have been functionalized with aptamers open various avenues for the development of new sensing and imaging devices. This perspective includes several sensitivity enhancement techniques along with a wide range of smart nanomaterials designed for the fabrication of new aptamer-functionalized nanomaterials for use in the detection of food and biomedical contaminants. This review describes the combined strategies for synthesizing nanomaterials that combine aptamers with gold, silica, graphene, and magnetic materials. The applications of these devices in the food and biomedical industries are discussed. Finally, this emerging field is discussed in terms of challenges and opportunities. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
