Abstract

Objective(s): Patients with substance-related disorders often experience co-occurring conditions such as stress, anxiety, and severe depression. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a nursing care plan based on Roy's adaptation model on the stress, anxiety, and depression levels of individuals undergoing treatment for drug addiction. Methods: In 2024, a randomized, single-blind clinical trial was conducted at Modares Hospital in Isfahan, Iran, involving 56 opioid abuse patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment at the addiction wards. The participants were divided into two groups: the intervention group (n=28) and the control group (n=28) using random sequence generation software. A one-month nursing care plan based on the Roy's adaptation model was provided to the intervention group, while the control group received routine treatments. Data was collected using the DASS-21 Questionnaire, and SPSS version 26 software was used for analysis, utilizing descriptive and inferential statistics (Paired T-test, Independent T-test and Chi-square). Results: The results showed that in the intervention group, the average score of stress, anxiety, and depression decreased significantly after the intervention (p<0.05). Also, before the intervention, the average score of stress, anxiety, and depression in the intervention and control groups was not significantly different (p>0.05), while after the intervention it was significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that the nursing care plan based on the Roy's adaptation model is effective in decreasing the stress, anxiety, and depression levels of individuals undergoing treatment for drug addiction. Therefore, this model can provide a suitable framework for providing care for such patients. © 2026, Iranian Institute for Health Sciences Research. All rights reserved.
