Abstract

This evaluation has scrutinized the edible species from the Polygonaceae family in a detailed manner concerning their bioactive properties, nutritional value, and emerging applications. These plants host a plethora of phytochemicals including tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids etc., and these are the factors responsible for their very strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. Thus, they have gained the status of disease prevention and management candidates. The combination of traditional medicinal knowledge together with contemporary scientific research is the main reason this review points to the therapeutic significance of Polygonaceae species in the area of human health. Their comprehensive and varied nutritional values endorse their being practicable and functional food sources with major dietary advantages. The acceptance of these plants, their health-promoting potential, and their integration in the field of nutraceuticals, functional foods, and natural food preservations, have already been indicated. Along with that, the research gaps are precisely identified, and future research directions are proposed so that these plants can realize their full potential. The focus is on their transition from herbal medicine to contemporary therapeutic applications, emphasizing their contribution to the development of plant-derived health products. This review has, in essence, elevated the image of Polygonaceae species as multifunctional resources for food, medicine, and health-promoting product innovation. © 2026 The Author(s).
