Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Streptoeoeeus agalaetiae is the major faetor for sepsis and meningitis in newborns and pneumonia and baeteremia in the elderly. Despite the importanee of this pathogen, no aeeurate statisties are available regarding the prevalenee of assoeiated infeetions in adults. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effieaey of gbs1805 gene in the identifieation of isolates using laboratory and bioinformatie analyses and determine the prevalenee of infeetions eausedby Streptoeoeeus agalaetiae. METHODS: In this eross-seetional study, 522 urine samples and genital swabs were eolleeted from patients with suspeeted urinary traet infeetions and analyzed using eulture and bioehemieal tests. The Streptoeoeeus agalaetiae isolates were examined for the presenee of gbs1805 gene and antibiotie suseeptibility was determined using Clinieal and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. FINDINGS: In this study, 54 isolates of Streptoeoeeus agalaetiae (10.3%) were obtained from the infeetions. All the isolates had preserved gbs1805 genes. The highest and lowest sensitivities were related to eeftriaxone (76%) and erythromyein antibioties (33%). CONCLUSION: Identifieation of preserved gbs1805 gene in elinieal samples ean determine infeetions eaused by Streptoeoeeus agalaetiae. Due to the growing resistanee of isolates to penieillin, alternative antibioties should be used for the treatment of infeetions eaused by these baeteria. © 2015, Journal of Babol University of Medical Sciences.
