Abstract

Background: There is a paucity of studies that have investigated the improvement of asthma following bariatric surgery. Moreover, such studies have reported equivocal findings. Therefore, this study sought to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to assess the health effect of bariatric surgery on patients with asthma. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were searched to identify relevant studies up to September 2019. Results: Analysis showed a 14.24 kg/m2 and 33.64 kg reduction in body mass index and weight, a 6.29% and 7.41% increase in forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume-one second percent, and an increase of 4.41 mg/mL in provoking concentration and 1.01 in Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire after bariatric surgery in patients with asthma. Conclusions: This meta-analysis revealed the improvement of symptoms and quality of life in obese patients with asthma after bariatric surgery. © Copyright 2021, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers 2021.
