Abstract

Lip or plate cleft (CL/CP) is the most common congenital facial anomaly. In patients with a unilateral cleft palate, the lesser segment is usually hypoplastic and displaced superiorly, posteriorly, and medially. In patients with bilateral CL/CP, the posterior alveolar segments can be collapsed medially to a greater degree, which may result in an extremely narrow maxilla with bilateral posterior crossbite. The premaxilla may be protrusive and either superiorly or inferiorly positioned. Alternately, it may present palatally and superiorly displaced. In these cases, orthosurgical intervention is inevitable. The aim of current chapter is to review new trends in orthognathic surgery in cleft patients. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
