Abstract

Cognitive function and brain health are increasingly recognized as vital components of overall well-being, especially as the global population ages. This chapter explores the significant role of consuming berries, which are rich in polyphenols, particularly flavonoids, in enhancing cognitive performance and mitigating age-related cognitive decline. Research indicates that berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and blackcurrants possess neuroprotective properties that promote synaptic plasticity, reduce neuroinflammation, and improve cerebral blood flow. These benefits are attributed to the modulation of neurotrophic factors and antioxidant actions that protect against oxidative stress. Both animal and human studies suggest that regular berry intake is associated with improved executive function, memory, attention, and overall cognitive health across various age groups. Additionally, consuming berries is linked to enhanced emotional well-being and may serve as a preventive strategy against neurodegenerative disorders. This chapter highlights the importance of integrating berry consumption into dietary guidelines and public health initiatives to promote cognitive vitality and overall health. © 2026 Elsevier Inc.
