Abstract

Epichlorohydrin (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 106-89-8) is a chlorinated epoxy compound used as an industrial solvent to manufacture glycerol, plastics, epoxy glues, and resins. It is an irritant and a carcinogen. Workers’ eyes, respiratory tract, and skin have been irritated as a result of acute (short-term) inhalation exposure to epichlorohydrin in the workplace. Humans may experience nausea, vomiting, coughing, labored breathing, lung inflammation, pulmonary edema, and renal lesions at high levels of exposure. Chronic (long-term) occupational exposure to epichlorohydrin in the air is associated with severe respiratory tract illness and hematological effects in humans. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
