Abstract

Sphingolipids are found in all mammalian cell membranes and in plasma lipoproteins. They act as structural and functional (numerous biological/physiological functions) elements. The cornerstone of sphingolipids is long-chain sphingosine, which can be N-acylated by different fatty acids (mainly palmitoyl-CoA), leading to ceramide formation (Fig. 2.1). © 2025 The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
