Abstract

Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) is crucial for preparing a health workforce that is “collaborative practice-ready,” enabling them to provide comprehensive, holistic, and patient-centered care. This study aims to develop, implement, and evaluate an IPE program in maternity clinical practice for medical interns and undergraduate midwifery students. Materials and Methods: Phase I primarily focuses on methods to design an IPE model and develop the corresponding curriculum based on this model. Phase II is a study comprising two stages. The first stage involves implementing the finalized curriculum with medical interns and midwifery students at Gonabad University. The second stage includes a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test intervention designed to evaluate the program’s impact on students’ attitudes and performance in interprofessional collaboration. Conclusion: This study describes the development of an IPE program in maternity clinical practice, designed to enhance and facilitate collaboration among healthcare professionals in maternity care settings. The training program has the potential to assist healthcare systems in reducing clinical errors, addressing hospital-based maternal mortalities and morbidities, lowering healthcare costs, and ultimately improving the quality of care. Additionally, it may serve as a guiding framework for educators seeking to integrate IPE into their curricula to close the gaps between education and practice. © 2026 Journal of Education and Health Promotion.
