Abstract

CSF pressure homeostasis is influenced by many factors interrupting the production, circulation, and absorption of the fluid. Changes in the CSF pressure stimulate pain-sensitive structures and result in a secondary headache which can be life threatening, so knowledge of how to diagnose and deal with the causes is crucial. These types of headaches are usually felt in the whole cranium especially retro orbital or bioccipital. Sometimes the pain is referred to the back of the shoulders and cervical spine. Two main secondary headaches related to the CSF pressure disruption are idiopathic intracranial hypertension and spontaneous intracranial hypotension. In this chapter, updates on definition, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of them are discussed separately in detail. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
